Five generations of the Henry Family have farmed the UmpquaValley. Three generations currently operate Henry Estate Vineyard and Winery. The diversity of activities capitalizes on the individual interests of each family member. Calvin Scott Henry III (Scott) founded the winery after a career in California as an aeronautical engineer. In 1972, Scott and his wife, Sylvia, brought their three children back to the family homestead in the heart of the Umpqua Valley and decided to try raising wine grapes. The entire family helped plant the original twelve acres, consisting of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer. The grapes sold so well, the Henry’s decided to harness their quality themselves. The winery was built in 1978-just in time for crush. Always striving for perfection, Scott designed a trellis system that raises the quality of wine grapes. The system soon became popular with Oregon winegrowers and THE SCOTT HENRY TRELLIS SYSTEM is now adopted by experts from around the world.
